about

Queen of the May
Traditional May song popular in Ireland, also known as Bring Flowers of the Rarest, was written by Mary E. Walsh, and published as the Crowning Hymn in the book Wreath of Mary, 1871. It is sung during a ‘May Crowning’ service in the Catholic Church, and is one of several May devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Verse 1 and the chorus express the joy of Spring and the love for Mary;

Bring flowers of the rarest,
Bring blossoms the fairest,
From garden and woodland and hillside and dale;
Our full hearts are swelling,
Our glad voices telling,
The praise of the loveliest flower of the vale!

O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today!
Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.
O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.
