about

Many airs are about leaving places and people one loves and this is no exception. I wrote it as I sat looking over Inch strand in County Cork, where I had been living for some years. I was inspired by the beauty and atmosphere of the land, the smell, the sound of the sea and the constantly changing weather. The long summer evenings, come winter were but a dream. The feeling of playing this air evokes the sadness of leaving somewhere I loved in a way that no other kind of music ever could.
Inch Strand is located on the south east coast of Cork between Ballycotton and Guileen.
The music of ancient Ireland consisted wholly of short airs, each with two strains or parts, seldom more. I have followed this structure with Inch Strand.
